Quality Assurance

Quality control issue identified with some geochemical data produced by the Denver Energy Geochemical Laboratory from 1996-2008.

The USGS Energy Geochemical Laboratory in Denver, Colorado, recently identified a quality control problem that affected some samples analyzed between 1996 and 2008, predominantly related to coal quality studies. Quality control procedures put in place in late 2006, along with a laboratory audit, helped to identify the problems. The identified problem primarily affects trace element data from Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS) analysis but does have a limited impact on other analyses from the same time period such as chloride, mercury, and selenium analyses. The potentially inaccurate geochemical data could affect reports and conclusions formed by USGS personnel and cooperators, and any other user of these data. Every effort is being made to identify the full scope of the problem, examine suspect data, and rerun samples if necessary and available. Below is a list of analyses (or groups of analyses) that have been scheduled for review:

The USGS Energy Geochemical Laboratory will periodically update the list of data sets being reviewed, and will also provide updated data sets as new analytical results become available. A status report of these reviews and potentially corrective actions will be posted on the Energy Resources Program Web site.
