Alaska Petroleum Studies Project Overview

Summary of Project

Alaska, the largest of the 50 United States, has more federal land than any other state and is rich in biologic, mineral, and energy resources. In terms of energy production and resources, it ranks second among oil-producing states and it has the greatest amount of undiscovered oil resources and the second greatest amount of undiscovered natural gas resources according to the 1995 USGS National Oil and Gas Assessment. It holds vast amounts of coal, and therefore potential for coalbed methane, and, in northern Alaska, potential for natural gas hydrates as well as large reserves of conventional natural gas. Energy resource considerations play an important part in Alaskan land management decisions and in energy policy development at local, regional, and national levels.

Activities of the Alaska Petroleum Studies Project are directed toward the assessment of conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources throughout Alaska. This project is a key element of USGS domestic oil and gas studies and a contributor to the World Energy Project Arctic Basins study.
In fiscal year 2003, the Alaska Petroleum Studies Project focus is on:

1) data gathering and analysis in northern Alaska in preparation for assessment of conventional oil and gas resources in the area between the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge;

2) collaboration with Minerals Management Service on a synthesis of the petroleum geology and resources of onshore and offshore northern Alaska as one of the better-known petroleum basins of the circum-Arctic region;

3) completion of data compilation, analysis, and assessment of the Yukon Flats basin in central Alaska;

4) continued baseline measurement of gas content of coal in various Alaska basins as needed for evaluation of coalbed methane potential; and

5) initiation of data collection in the Cook Inlet basin in preparation for a new oil and gas assessment.
